UVM researcher behind heart health study

November 21, 2011

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - A University of Vermont researcher got to present findings at a national conference from a study showing that even small lifestyle changes can improve cardiovascular health.

Dr. Mary Cushman of the University of Vermont College of Medicine traveled to the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions conference in Orlando, Fla., this past week to present her findings.

The study of nearly 18,000 adults showed that those who improved just 1 of 7 good-health factors listed by the heart association reduced their risk of death during the study period by 14%.

The seven factors targeted for improvement included blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose or body mass index, ending a smoking habit, increasing physical activity or adopting a healthy diet.
