FileMANCHESTER, Vt. (AP) - Most of Vermont's 5,000 miles of snowmobile trails will be ready when the snow flies after extensive work following the floods brought on by Tropical Irene.
The executive director of the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers says it's taken month of mostly volunteer labor to restore damaged trails.
Bryant Watson tells Vermont Public Radio at least 95% of the trails are expected to open this winter.
The Deerfield Valley Stump Jumpers Snowmobile Club rented two excavators to fix damaged trails in southern Vermont, with some club members taking vacations and unpaid time off from their jobs to do the work.
Officials say one important trail that won't be open is a 10-mile section that links the southern half of the Green Mountain National Forest to the northern half.
