Essex students win MTV contest

Essex, Vermont - November 30, 2011

A group of Essex High School students won recognition for an MTV video promoting having fun while staying safe.

The contest challenged students to produce a video that answered the question, "What's your idea of an epic weekend?"

Their winning video-- one of only four chosen from hundreds of entries nationwide-- lays out plans for a community festival at the Champlain Valley Expo in Essex Junction.

The group, called Above the Influence, pledges to stay away from mind-altering substances.

They told us on the Channel 3 Morning News that they hope their video will convince their peers to do the same.

"Well, we try to focus on promoting healthy activities and you can still have a lot of fun without being under the influence and using substances and still have a great time," said Erika Quackenbush of Essex High School.

MTV will sponsor a Dec. 17 event just for Essex High School students.

A $15 entry fee will be used to help support the local Unified Sports program, which matches individuals who have special needs with those who don't.
