Burlington overrun by Santas

Burlington, Vermont - December 4, 2011

Santa won't take to the skies for a few more weeks but Sunday 1,200 of his best imitators took to the streets. They helped raise thousands for charity without the help of a single elf.

The Santas filled Church St. as they prepared for a three-mile training run before Christmas Eve. "We have Santas from all over Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, Québec, everywhere," said Race Director Kelly Arnott.

The first Burlington Vermont Santa Run raised a few thousand dollars for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Those who competed say it's not easy being Kris Kringle.

"It was a little challenging, I usually don't wear a Santa jacket when I run and it kept flying open," said Derek Poirier. He said the beard also got in the way. "It moves around quite a bit," he said, "I think I ate maybe eight or nine cotton balls during the entire race."

"It's really bulky and hot," said 11-year-old Kelly Butts-Spirita of the outfit. He said he didn't know what to think of the event at first. "I was kind of like that's crazy, but then it's actually kind of cool."

Organizers said they never expected to see so many Santa costumes and think they've found a new holiday tradition. "Next year is 'Yes'," said Arnott. She says they'll plan for more than 2,000 entrants next year.

Those we spoke to say they're not intimidated by the field potentially becoming more competitive. Poirier is an avid runner, but he says he didn't pay attention to his time. "I just want to have a good time," he explained.
