Meet the Most Interesting Man in the World

Southern Vermont - December 5, 2011

You might know him as the Most Interesting Man in the World, from Dos Equis beer commercials, and interestingly enough he lives in Vermont.

You might not think it at first glance, but Jonathan Goldsmith is the Most Interesting Man in the World. The actor has achieved notoriety for his role in Dos Equis beer commercials with the famous last line: "I don't always drink beer, but when I do, I choose Dos Equis."

"What started out as just a job has turned out into a phenomenal thing -- that's the sound of knocking on wood," he said.

Some of the most interesting man in the world's traits: His blood smells like cologne; Sharks have a week dedicated to him; and the police often question him just because they find him interesting. "He once warned a psychic -- I love that," Goldsmith added.

It's an ad campaign that has taken on a life of its own, becoming part of popular culture, and with the lines often popping up in everyday conversations.  Dos Equis saw sales increase as soon as they started airing the ads five years ago and Goldsmith says the work has made him millions.
"I'm really at the point where most people are in the twilight in their career and mine is just exploding," he said.

Before the Dos Equis campaign, Goldsmith guest starred in over 350 shows, including Dynasty and Dallas. This new role as a suave Latino is a real surprise for this 73-year-old from the Bronx.

Reporter Gina Bullard: "What's the Most Interesting Man in the World doing in Vermont?"

Jonathan Goldsmith: "I've always had an affinity for Vermont. My father had an old farm house in Chatam, New York and we'd come up on weekends," he said.

He now lives in Southern Vermont with his wife Barbara and their dog.

Reporter Gina Bullard: "Do you ever get bored here?"

Jonathan Goldsmith: "No, I never get bored anyplace... see the library."

And although its just a character he portrays, this reporter found out quickly the real Jonathan Goldsmith is really interesting. "I think if you're interested you becoming interesting," he said.

He is passionate about helping disabled and abused children -- a mission for over 50 years.
"I've always had a deep feeling for children at risk," he said.

Goldsmith is also dedicated to supporting the local arts scene -- he volunteered his time this past weekend to the Southern Vermont Arts Center, where a dinner date with him was auctioned off to the highest bidder.

His mom was a model. He loves sailing, reading and fly fishing with his dad's rod.

Reporter Gina Bullard: "Do you ever wish the life you depict is the life you could lead?"

Jonathan Goldsmith: "Of course, sure, I'd love to be that guy."

And he'll get to keep playing that guy for at least two more years.

Reporter Gina Bullard: "Can you say the line?"

Jonathan Goldsmith: "No I can't -- contractually I can't."

And if you're wondering what he drinks when he's not drinking Dos Equis? Goldsmith says he likes martinis and scotch.  Interesting.
