Holiday Decorating-Your important things

December 13, 2011

A visit to Kris Engstrom's dining room and you will know it is the holidays, but she manages to create the festive atmosphere without using the traditional red and green color palette.

"It's different because I use things that are important to me, in my life. I brought out my little individual pieces and I use those as my color scheme, instead of doing the more traditional red and green. I pull in some of the things that I really feel like are Christmas to me.

This is my answer to an advent wreath. Basically it's a piece that I have from a long time ago, that's a traditional Norwegian folk painting called rosemaling. And that's what the candle holder is. Then I just built the centerpiece around it."

"It's beautiful! And you also have some things back here."

"Oh that's the troll corner!"

"That is so cute!"

"My little Norwegian trolls! I sort of featured them in a little landscape so that they could be part of my Christmas."

"I love that."

"The Dala horse is a Swedish horse and that's a traditional holiday decoration in Sweden. And then my little coffee pot is a Tutekanne, that's from Norway also."

"So you really can kind of come of with any sort of a color scheme and still make it feel like Christmas."

"As long as it's important to you, that's all that matters."
