Donations down at Salvation Army

Williston, Vermont - December 16, 2011

The Salvation Army says the numbers are down dramatically this year both for bell-ringing volunteers and donations.

Last year, the nonprofit had raised nearly $52,000 by now. But this year the total so far is under $35,000.

The Channel 3 News team was out helping the Salvation Army Friday, ringing bells at the Walmart in Williston.

Donors say it's important to help out during the holidays.

"I think when you have what you need and what you want in your life it is important to give back to others who are not as fortunate," donor Katie Peters said.

Donor Amy Coutu said her hopes for the holiday season, "Are that they go to those that are in need and that they go to brighten somebody else's day."

Donations may be down, but demand is up. Officials with the Salvation Army say their Christmas program that provides toys and food for kids is now serving 800 families, compared to 650 last year.
