Monroe, New Hampshire - December 21, 2011
Investigators are still trying to determine what caused a fire at an egg farm in Monroe, N.H.
Eight departments in New Hampshire and Vermont battled the blaze at Pete and Gerry's Organic Egg Farm, but they could not save a processing plant that was under construction.
No people or animals were injured in the blaze and the farm lost none of its product.
Owners say what they did lose is time.
"It's going to be hard building during the winter so we're probably three or four months behind. We were hoping to be in this doubling our processing capacity by late January, early February, so it's going to be well beyond that now," said Jesse Laflamme, co-owner of Pete & Gerry's.
The lost processing plant was valued at roughly $1 million.
Owners say demand is growing for organic farm products nationwide. Pete & Gerry's now processes eggs from 26 farms in Vermont and New Hampshire.
