STOWE, Vt.-- UVM hosted the NCAA Skiing national championships back in Mid March. Four Days of events were compacted into three tanks to mother nature. On the very first event of the Championships Dartmouth's Sam Tarling won a National Championship in the 10K classic. The victory by the Burke Mountain academy grad helped the Big Green to a third place finish in the team standings behind runner up Utah and Champion Colorado.
Vermont was the number one team in the country entering the championships, but the Cats had some troubles getting off on the right ski. The team did get one national title thanks to Tim Kelley. The Starksboro native winning the slalom as his team ended up 6th in the team standings.
Despite's UVM's rough luck, they do have a National Champion and were gracious hosts to the premiere college skiing event. The NCAA Championships at Stowe number 5 on our list of top 5 local sports stories of 2011.
