Plainfield, Vermont - December 27, 2011
It was a frightening ride along Route 2 in Marshfield Tuesday for a tractor-trailer driver and his son.
Police say Eric Hathaway, 32, of Colchester, was headed east on Route 2 at midday, when he could not make a sharp corner near the Onion River Campground. His truck ended up in the Winooski River.
It took nearly an hour for rescue crews to pull Hathaway from the mangled cab. Hathaway and his 9-year-old son, who was a passenger in the truck, were taken to the hospital. Rescuers believe they will be OK.
It's unclear what caused the accident, but that stretch of road at Barrows Corner is narrow and has a sharp corner.
Rescue personnel from Marshfield, Plainfield and Cabot responded to the crash. Route 2 was closed and traffic was rerouted as officials tried to remove the tractor-trailer from the river.
