New Year's Day is coming right up. And people serving a meal might want to consider a side dish which packs a wallop of flavor-- spiced, agave-sweetened Cranberry Apple Compote.

Spiced "No-Sugar" Cranberry-Apple Compote
1/3 cup agave syrup
12 oz fresh cranberries
1/4 tsp kosher salt
Zest of one orange
Juice of 1 orange
1 apple, peeled and diced
1 pod star anise
3 whole allspice berries
3 whole cloves
1 stick cinnamon
1 cup dried currants
Place the whole spices together on a piece of cheese cloth. Gather the sides together and tie it into a sachet. In a medium sauce pot, combine agave, cranberries, salt, orange juice and zest, diced apple, and the sachet of spices. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Simmer for 20 minutes or until the apples are soft and the mixture is aromatic of spices. Remove from the heat, stir in the dried currants, transfer to a heat-proof plastic or glass bowl and chill completely before serving.
