It took just 4 seasons as a program for the Norwich Women's hockey team to win it's first national championship. Last March the Cadets capped an amazing season with a 5-2 victory over host RIT in the national title game. Norwich jumped out to an early 2-0 and took a 3-2 lead after one period. Senior captain, All-American and Barre native Sophie Leclerc put the title on ice with power play goals in the second and third periods.
The celebration after the game continued when the ladies returned back home to Northfield with the NCAA Championship Trophy in hand.
"It's unbelievable to go through the journey we have," Leclerc said. "I never want to let it go to be honest with you. I can hold onto it forever."
A National Title for the Norwich Women's Hockey Team. Number three on our list of the top five local sports stories of 2011.
