Burlington, Vermont – December 30, 2011
2012 is the Year of the Dragon, and in the spirit of the New
Year, students from the Integrated Arts Academy at the H.O. Wheeler School in
Burlington are taking timeout of their vacation to go to dragon school.
The children built their own giant paper dragon. The kids filled the
cafeteria Friday afternoon to bring the fabric and paper mache dragon to life.
The dress rehearsal was in
preparation for Burlington's First Night festivities. The group will take their
show to Church Street Saturday at 5 p.m.
"People are cheering,
they're dancing, having fun with their friends and their family, but the whole
community-- you can feel it, you can feel this pulse of affection coming at
you, this warmth," said Judy Newman, a First Night Volunteer.
Six Burlington schools will have similar
dragons at the New Year's Eve festivities.
Judy Newman and Jennifer Crowell, the executive director of First Night Burlington, appeared on The :30 to talk about it.
