Montpelier, Vermont - January 3, 2012
Tuesday was opening day at the
Statehouse in Montpelier.
Kristin Carlson talked with Vt. House Speaker Shap Smith
and Vt. House Minority Leader Don Turner about the issues ahead this year.
Budgeting issues from Irene are expected to predominate. On the other hand, the
project deficit for fiscal year 2013 has suddenly lowered, and Smith predicts
that revenues will be sufficient to avoid the need for new taxes.
Turner talked about what the
Republicans will have to do in order to stay relevant with only 48
representatives. The Republicans say
they can call it a successful year if no new taxes are added, the deficit is
brought down, and if they finish on track for 2013 to be a good fiscal year.
