With the presidential campaign in full swing, pundits and political scientists are once again debating the flaws of the American political system.
University of Vermont political science professor Anthony Gierzynski is the author of a new book called "Saving American Elections." He told us on the Channel 3 News Tuesday morning that people need to look at the larger reasons for problems in the system.
"Some of the things people focus on, like low voter turnout or lack of information on the part of the voters or the media, something along those lines, some of those tend to be more like symptoms of the problem. I think what you have to do is look a little more deeply at the U.S. system, a little more big picture to see some of the problems," Gierzynski said.
Gierzynski says there isn't one quick fix to make the political system more accessible and informative, and those looking to make changes need to assess their larger impact.
Gierzynski says he's working on finishing his next book-- an analysis of the impact of the Harry Potter series on the politics of the millennial generation.
