BOSTON, Mass. - An amazing weekend for the University of Vermont hockey program ended in frustration Saturday as the Cats fell to Massachusetts 3-2 in overtime at Frozen Fenway.
Michael Marcou's power play goal with 22.3 seconds left in OT lifted the Minutemen to the win. Vermont had chances both late in regulation and early in the extra session thanks to a five minute major penalty on UMass, but the puck just wouldn't find the back of the net when the Cats needed it most.
The loss drops the Catamounts to 4-15-1, 1-11-1 in Hockey East play. Kyle Reynolds and Drew MacKenzie scored for Vermont, the senior defenseman performing a baseball-style slide on the ice after netting his second period goal that tied the game at two.
The Frozen Fenway game was played on a rink set up on the field at Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox. It certainly was baseball weather, with a temperature of 57 degress at the start of the game Saturday afternoon and not a flake of snow on the ground.
The game capped a memorable weekend that included an alumni game on Friday and a Fan Fest earlier Saturday. The game was shown live on NESN.
