A community faith network on Sunday presented its case for a more equitable system in Vermont.
Vermont Interfaith Action is composed of more than a dozen faith organizations.
The group hosted Vt. Secretary of Administration Jeb Spaulding, State Senators Tim Ashe, Anthony Pollina, and Sally Fox, as well as State Representative Martha Heath.
VIA members say they want to see the legislature take action on prison reform, poverty, housing, education, healthcare, and consider higher taxes on the wealthy.
"If Vermont really wants to be seen by itself and others as leading the country in responding to the economy, then the wealthy in Vermont are going to have to share their share of the burden," said VIA member, Rabbi Joshua Chasan.
Vermont lawmakers last year rejected a proposal to raise the income tax rate for the wealthiest Vermonters to balance the budget. The Governor -- who has also rejected that approach -- is expected to make his budget address Thursday.
