Burlington, Vermont – January 16, 2012
January is national mentoring month, giving a chance to recognize mentors and try and recruit new volunteers. There are 800 mentors in Chittenden County, that's more then double the number 8 years ago.
Youths with mentors are 46% less likely then peers to start using drugs; 27% less likely to start drinking; 52% less likely to skip school; 32% less likely to hit someone.
But mentoring officials say there are not enough men part of the program. On The :30 to talk more about this is Andrea Torello, The Executive Director of Mobius and Burlington Police Chief Michael Schirling the National Mentoring Month spokesperson.
