Vt gets an F for efforts to prevent smoking

Williston, Vermont - January 19, 2012

For the first time, Vermont is getting a failing grade for its efforts to prevent smoking.

The latest report card from the American Lung Association criticizes the state for cutting a million dollars from its tobacco control programs in the current fiscal year and in next year's budget. The state also gets a D for the amount of funding it spends to help people quit smoking.

Vermont does get an A for policies that protect people from secondhand smoke and a B for having the 7th highest tobacco taxes in the country.
