Burlington, Vermont - January 21, 2012
(AP) - Officials in Vermont's largest city are planning to downsize the Chinese language program at the public high school to save money after several years of low enrollment.
The Burlington Free Press reports the total enrollment is 27 students at Burlington High School's three classes, as well as independent study for students at higher levels.
The plan is to remove the third class next year. That would save over $40,000 toward a target of $200,000 in staffing cuts that the school board has told the school to make.
Other fund would be saved by reducing French classes, reducing a remedial reading teacher position, cutting a tutoring position, and other reductions.
