A child's death in the Northeast Kingdom still remains a mystery. A Barton family now has their 7-year-old's toxicology report, but they still don't know what caused the little girl's death.
The Matten family received the toxicology results of Kaylynne Matten on Wednesday. The certificate says the manner of death could not be determined. And that has Kaylynne's family still searching for answers. They suspect she died due to complications from a flu shot.
The medical examiner's report doesn't name a specific cause, but does list contributing conditions, including a virus in her heart.
Kaylynne had just gotten a flu shot four days before her death.
These results have been highly anticipated, not only by the family but by the public. Kaylynne's mother, Nicole Matten, says she called the town clerk's office on Wednesday asking if the toxicology results were in. And that's how she got them. They had been released two days before but the family wasn't notified.
"He said it looks like a virus went to her heart. What virus they can't determine," mom Nicole Matten said.
"She was 100 percent healthy and I believe it had something to do with it," dad Justin Matten said.
We did reach out to Vermont's Health Commissioner late Thursday. We've not heard back yet, but we hope to speak to him for more insight as to what this means.
