1 person found dead in NH house fire

January 27, 2012

WOODSVILLE, N.H. (AP) - New Hampshire fire officials say they found no smoke detectors in the Woodsville house where a resident died in a fire.

Investigators say the fire appears to have started inside a space between the first and second floors of the home. The victim was found on the second floor.

A neighbor walking by the home reported fire coming from it shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday.

New Hampshire Fire Marshal J. William Degnan urges home owners to have smoke detectors and check them regularly. He says 74 percent of home fire deaths occur in homes with no working smoke detectors.

State and local fire officials have not yet released the victim's identity. An autopsy was done Friday.
