When students at Champlain Valley Union High School head to school on Monday, they will be without one of their own. Sixteen year-old Zeke Kassel died in a car accident Friday and the community is trying to cope with that loss.
"His loss leaves a tremendous hole in our community that we'll move through together and draw strength from each other," said Champlain Valley Union High School Principal Sean McMannon.
He says Zeke Kassel will be remembered as a dedicated student, brother, son and friend. "This wonderful young man who people loved, he was fun to be around and it's hard for people to comprehend and get their brain around such a significant loss," he said.
Kassel died in a car accident on Shelburne Falls Road on his way to school Friday, the 17-year- old driver and the driver's 15-year-old sister were not injured. Police are still investigating the accident, but they do not believe speed was a factor.
On Monday the halls of Champlain Valley Union High School will hold a host of emotions from students and staff. It's McMannon's job to balance grief and guidance. "We try to balance routine with the idea that there's a range of emotions that students and staff need to go through and we give the space to them to some degree," he said.
For some it will be an empty seat in the classroom, others the loss of a best friend or a brother. Either way, it's certain to be difficult as the community mourns the loss of a young life.
