EAST MONTPELIER, Vt. -
The former building and maintenance supervisor at U-32 High School pleaded not guilty to charges he stole from the school to build himself a new home.
Casey Harrington, 39, is charged with embezzlement.
School officials say a routine audit last fall detected some irregularities. It wasn't money that was missing, but items that had been purchased. The school says $30,000 worth of goods was missing, like gym lights and tools. Police reportedly found the items at Harrington's new home in Barre Town.
"He was responsible for all of the purchasing and inventory," said Robbe Brook, the school superintendent. "It became apparent that perhaps some of the things he was purchasing, he was also using for his own personal use."
It's unclear how long the scheme had been going on.
The school's insurance company is expected to cover the losses.
Harrington, who had worked at the school for three years, resigned from the school in November. His annual salary was $60,000.
