House looks to pull NH out of No Child Left Behind

Posted: Updated:

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - Two bills in the New Hampshire House would withdraw the state from the controversial No Child Left Behind law, but the cost would be an estimated $61.6 million loss in federal money tied to the law.

New Hampshire would be the first state to withdraw from the law if the legislation were to pass. Consequences would include the loss of $40.5 million targeted at poorer, disadvantaged students statewide, the loss of about two dozen Department of Education jobs and the potential reduction of 200 reading and math tutoring jobs.

Republican Rep. Michael Balboni from Nashua is the chairman of the Education Committee and the sponsor of 1 of the bills. He says the resulting funding gap would be each individual schools districts' responsibility.
