Preisdent Barack Obama
BURLINGTON, Vt. -
A president of the United States has not set foot on Vermont soil in 16 years, but that is about to change.
WCAX-News has learned President Barack Obama is planning a trip to the Green Mountains next month. Sources tell us the first-term president is planning a visit to Vermont on Friday March 30th.
Obama did visit Vermont back in 2006 when he was a candidate for President. A big crowd came to hear him speak at the University of Vermont.
George W. Bush never visited Vermont in his eight years as President. That was noteworthy because Vermont was the only state in the union that the Republican did not visit while he was in office.
The last sitting President to visit Vermont was Bill Clinton. He came to Burlington in the summer of 1995. President Clinton mingled on Church Street and also attended a conference hosted by the National Governor's Association.
The details of this visit are sketchy at this point, but sources tell us it is campaign related and President Obama will be in Vermont to help raise money for Democrats and his own re-election for a second term.
The President faces a tough re-election challenge and Vermont would not be a stop he would likely make in the summer or fall because he will need to be in battleground states. Obama easily won Vermont in 2008 and is likely to again this year.
This trip could change because the President's schedule is always fluid but sources familiar with the trip say Democrats have started to plan for the President's trip.
