TUPPER LAKE, N.Y. -
Gov. Andrew Cuomo, D-New York, supports a plan to redevelop the old Big Tupper Ski Area.
Last month, the Adirondack Park Agency approved the largest development project ever in the park. It had studied the project for eight years. The plan is to expand the Big Tupper Ski Area, including 700 units of mixed housing and other amenities.
Environmentalists are concerned about the impact on wildlife. But supporters say it will give the area an economic boost.
The governor says the economic impacts outweigh the environmental impacts.
"Obviously you always get a difference of opinion, but I think most people think this was good. It's going to create jobs; it's going to bring economic opportunity. There's a delicate balance; we want to protect, we want to preserve, but people also want to make a living and the region has to be economically viable," Cuomo said.
More permits are needed before the developer can break ground, but the APA permit was considered the most difficult to get.
