RUTLAND, Vt. -
A new bill before the Vt. House Ways and Means Committee would waive a $365,000 bill a senior living facility in Rutland is facing for back taxes.
The state told the Gables of Rutland in December that it owed eight years of rooms and meals taxes.
Gables officials believed they were exempt from rooms and meals taxes because the facility is similar to other exempt facilities, like convalescent homes.
A new bill would wipe out that tax bill and update antiquated tax language to reflect advances in senior living options and would add to the list of exclusions senior living facilities, assisted living facilities, and homes for terminally ill, among other living options.
