SALEM, N.Y. (AP) - Death certificates issued after a propane explosion killed six people in a northern New York home now list "homicide" as the manner of death, a sign that criminal charges are possible.
State police said Wednesday the criminal investigation continues into the July 13 explosion that leveled a home in rural Salem and that there is a "subject of interest." Capt. Steven James said a determination will have to be made if the conduct that led to the propane leak involved criminal negligence or reckless conduct.
Investigators previously determined that a spark from a water pump switch apparently ignited propane that had leaked and accumulated in the cellar of the home.
James stressed there are no arrests and they are conferring with prosecutors. No quick decision is expected.
