Vt. closes Townshend covered bridge to pedestrians

Posted: Updated:

TOWNSHEND, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Agency of Transportation says the historic Scott Bridge in Townshend has been closed to all traffic, including pedestrians.

The bridge has been closed to vehicles for years, but it has been a tourist magnet since flooding from Tropical Storm Irene.

The 277-foot Scott Bridge, built in 1870 over the West River, is listed as the longest wooden span in Vermont.

Since the Townshend Dam Road was closed following Irene, the covered bridge has been used as a school drop off point and pedestrian crossing.

Transportation Secretary Brian Searles said Friday the closure will be disruptive, but public safety is the first concern.
