LYME, N.H./STOWE, Vt. - The University of Vermont ski team dominated the men's GS and the women's 5K freestyle races on the opening day of the Dartmouth Carnival to take a 118-point lead over the Big Green.  UVM sits in first place with 500 points, leading Dartmouth (382 pts) and Middlebury (379 pts) after day one.
 
At Trapp Family Lodge, where the Nordic races were moved to earlier this week, the Catamounts placed 2-3-5 in the 5K freestyle.  Dartmouth's Sophie Caldwell and UVM's Caitlin Patterson continued their season long duel.
 
This time Caldwell was three seconds faster than Patterson to claim first place with a winning time of 13:47.7.  Patterson finished second at 13:50.2.  Fellow Catamounts Lucy Garrec and Amy Glen rounded out the top three skiers for UVM.  Garrec earned a spot on the podium with a third-place time of 13:51.3, while Glen finished fifth at 14:07.9.
 
In the men's 10k freestyle, Middlebury's Patrick Johnson continued his strong skiing this season, picking up first place honors with a time of 25:50.1.  Dartmouth's Sam Tarling finished second with a time of 26:15.0, despite running over a squirrel during the race.
 
Alex Howe led the Catamounts, earning the final spot on the podium with a third-place time of 26:20.8.  Teammates Dylan Grald and Pete Hegman rounded out the scoring skiers for Vermont.  Grald placed sixth and Hegman followed in seventh place.
 
On the hill at the Dartmouth Skiway in Lyme, N.H., the Catamounts swept the podium and Tim Kelley added a fourth place finish as UVM dominated the men's GS.  Jonathan Nordbotten won the event with a time of 1:48.98, Bobby Farrell was second (1:49.07) and Sean Higgins finished off the UVM sweep with a time of 1:49.24.
 
In the women's GS, Kate Ryley's second run of 55.89 seconds propelled her to her first win of the season. She finished the race with a two-run total of 1:53.54.  Elise Tefre earned a fifth place finish with a time of 1:54.60 and Amanda McDonald was 16th to round out the team.
 
The final day of the Dartmouth Carnival gets underway at 9 a.m. with the slalom races at the Dartmouth Skiway.  The Nordic races being at 10 a.m. at Trapp Family Lodge.
