An early morning ice rescue on Lake Champlain after a vehicle went through the frozen surface.
Rescue crews got the call early Sunday morning of a possible vehicle through the ice near the Swanton Alburgh bridge. Multiple fire departments, border patrol, and cold water rescue crews responded. Divers entered the water and located the submerged vehicle under about 16 inches of ice. Fire officials say a pressure crack in the ice is the likely cause of the incident.
"The fishermen told us that the ice conditions are about 16 inches of ice all the way out through to where the pressure crack is. The ice appears to be safe everywhere except for where the crack is. There is an opening there with flowing water," said Alburgh Fire
Chief Tyler Gotshall.
According to State Police, after multiple dives, it's been determined that no one was in the vehicle when it went under. The incident is still under investigation.
