>>> GOOD MORNING, EVERY ONE, I'M DARREN PERRON.

>> AND I'M KYLE MIDURA.leco

>> WE HAVE WANDA HINES, SEEKING THE OFFICE OF MAYOR.

>> THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME TODAY ON "YOU CAN QUOTE ME". I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO OUR LIVELY CONVERSATION.

>> KYLE, YOU COVER BURLINGTON POLITICS FOR US, JUMP INTO IT.

>> WANDA CAN YOU TELL US THE MAJOR TENANTS.

>> THE MAJOR TENANTS.

>> THE PLATFORM.

>> OKAY, I HAVE NEVER HEARD IT CALLED THAT, I WAS GOING TO GIVE YOU A LIST OF RENTERS. THE MAJOR PLATFORMS I WANT TO TALK ABOUT WILL BE DEFINITELY FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT AND ACCOUNTABILITY ESPECIALLY AT CITY HALL EVEN WITH THE ASSEMBLY OF A NEW ADMINISTRATIVE TEAM SO THAT WE CAN HOPE TOWARDS MAKING ACCOUNTABILITY THE NORM. ANOTHER WILL BE AND AS WE ALL KNOW ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND JOB CREATION. WE HAVE TO EXPAND OUR REVENUE SOURCES AND GROW THEM AND NOT AT THE EXPENSE OF TAXPAYERS. BURLINGTON HAS BEEN REALLY VERY SOUND AND SUCCESSFUL ESPECIALLY WITH INCUBATOR BUSINESSES AND GROWING SMALL BUSINESSES. I THINK WE NEED TO WORK BETTER PARTNERSHIP WITH THE BURLINGTON BUSINESS RELATIONSHIP BUT LOOK THROUGH CHIT CHITTENDEN COUNTY. I DON'T THINK WE WILL HAVE AFFORDABLE LIVES OR AFFORD HOMES IF WE DO NOT CREATE ENOUGH JOBS AND THAT IN ITSELF TIES INTO OUR TRANSIT CENTER SO WE WILL LOOK TO MAKE SURE THOSE JOBS ARE ACCESSIBLE AND IF WE LOOK AT HOUSING WE WILL MAKE HOUSING ACCESSIBLE. THE OTHER AREA IS SOCIAL ISSUES. I DO NOT BELIEVE WE CAN HAVE ECONOMIC GROWTH UNLESS WE ADDRESS THE SOCIAL ISSUES HEAD ON, I'M TALKING SOCIAL ISSUES WHERE WE ARE LOOKING AT VIOLENCE, CRIME, PUBLIC SAFETY, DEPENDENCIES AND SUCH. SOCIAL ISSUES WHICH IMPACT THE ABILITY OF BUSINESSES TO WANT TO COME DOWNTOWN. I THINK THAT WE ARE REALLY GOOD ABOUT, OKAY, STEPPING UP TO THE PLATE AND ADDRESSING THE ISSUES, BUT WE NEED TO BE MORE VISIBLE BOUGHT IT. I THINK ONE EXAMPLE IS ARE THE REMOVAL OF BENCHES, I THINK WE SHOULD HAVE A CLEAR CONVERSATION, WHY ARE WE REMOVING BENCHES DOWNTOWN? BECAUSE WE DON'T WANT CERTAIN PEOPLE BECAUSE WE FEEL THEY ARE DETERRING CERTAIN PEOPLE. AND THE SMOKING BAN, PROCESS AND THE MAYOR VETOED IT. WE WANT TO PERHAPS WORK ON OUR ECONOMIC GROWTH DOWNTOWN BY HAVING MORE PEOPLE COME DOWN AND FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE BUT WE ARE NOT ADDRESSING THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM. WHY ARE OUR YOUNG PEOPLE HANGING OUT ON THE STREETS ALL THE TIME? WHY ARE THEY NOT WORKING? WHY DO WE HAVE SUCH HIGH CRIME? WHAT IS GOING ON, WE NEED TO BE MORE VISIBLE THERE. I PLAN ON ADDRESSING IN A WAY THAT IS MORE TRANS PARENT AND HAVING A CONVERSATION ABOVE TABLE AND ADDRESS THE SOCIAL ISSUES WHICH ARE IMPACTING OUR ECONOMIC GROWTH DOWNTOWN. WE HAVE THE SAME SIDE OF THE SAME COIN. ANOTHER AREA, BURLINGTON HAS BEEN A REFUGEE RESELLMENT COMMUNITY SINCE 1982 WITH THE VERMONT EFFECTIVE YOU GEE REFUGEE RESET ELEMENT. I THINK WE SHOULD PARTNER WITH THE VERMONT RESETTLMENT PARTNERSHIP AND LOOK AT THE CAPACITY IN SETTLING GROUPS OF REFUGEES, DO WE HAVE ADEQUATE HOUSING, AVAILABLE SCHOOLS, JOBS, HEALTHCARE AND OTHER WRAP AROUND SERVICES, THIS IS SOMETHING I DON'T FEEL HAS BEEN TALKED ABOUT EVER SINCE WE'VE BECOME A SETTLEMENT COMMUNITY. WHEN WE ARE ABLE TO PROVIDE JOBS FOR ALL PEOPLE, NOT JUST REFUGEES WHO ARE BEING SET UP FOR FAILURE BECAUSE WE DONE HAVE ENOUGH HOUSING FOR THOSE FAMILIES, WHAT ABOUT OUR EXISTING FAMILIES? OUR SHELTERS ARE OVERCROWDED. WE NEED TO EXPLORE ADDITIONAL RESOURCES AND PROGRAMS AT THE STATE AND FEDERAL LEVEL AND NONPROFIT LEVEL TO EASE THE DRAIN ON LOCAL RESOURCES IF THERE IS ANY, IN SOME COMMUNITIES THEY FOUND REFUGEES HAVE HAD AN INCREASE, CONTRIBUTION TO THE ECONOMIC GROWTH AS OPPRESSED TO A PERCEPTION OUT THERE THEY ARE DRAINING, THAT IS NOT THE CASE, I WOULD LIKE TO DO A SURVEY ON THAT TO SHOW THE ECONOMIC CONTRIBUTION THERE AND AT THE SAME TIME LOOK ABOUT HOW WE CAN HAVE AND HIGHLIGHT HOW THESE FAMILIES ARE CONTRIBUTING. AGAIN, LET'S REALLY LOOK AT OUR COMMITMENT AND OUR ABILITIES AND HAVE THE CONVERSATION UP HERE AND LOOK WHO IS IN THE ROOM WHEN HAVING THAT CONVERSATION. I'D LIKE TO SEE MORE LEADERSHIP FROM THOSE COMMUNITIES IN THAT ROOM. THE OTHER IS I WANT TO CONTINUE WORK ON BURLINGTON BEING THE COMMUNITY OF CHOICE AND WHAT WILL MAKE IT THAT, MAKING SURE IT IS ATTRACTIVE TO RESIDENTS, VISITORS, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY I THINK ABOUT MAKING IT A COMMUNITY OF CHOICE IS BEING REALISTIC AROUND THE LEADERSHIP, WILL IT BRING BURLINGTON BACK TO WHERE -- I WAS GOING TO SAY BRINGING BURLINGTON BACK TO THE BASICS, THAT TO ME IS ABOUT A COMMUNITY OF CHOICE OR BRING BURLINGTON BACK TO THE BASICS WHERE WE ANALYZE OUR REVENUE. WE WILL BRING BURLINGTON BACK TO THE BASICS WHERE WE NEED TO ENSURE OUR BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT IS FRIENDLY. WE WANT TO BRING BURLINGTON BACK TO THE BASICS WHERE LET'S SAY WE USED TO SUPPORT TAX PAYERS AND PEOPLE THAT LIVE HERE. SO, THOSE ARE PRETTY MUCH MY TALKING POINTS BUT TO BE REALISTIC ABOUT THE WHOLE THING, IT'S NOT JUST GOING TO TAKE MY LEADERSHIP BUT THE ADMINISTRATIVE TEAM OR THE TEAM THAT IS WRAPPED AROUND ME, THAT IS PRETTY MUCH THAT. SO, GO AHEAD.

>> WHAT YOU HAVE OUTLINED HERE -- GLITS MYHEREIS --

>> YES, IT'S MY SIX POINT PLAN. YOU CAN SEE IT ON MY WEBSITE.

>> WHAT MAKES YOU QUALIFIED TO LEAD THE STATE'S LARGEST CITY?

>> WELL, AFTER -- WE HAD SPOKE ABOUT THIS EARLIER, IT IS LIKE THE WIZARD OF OZ, IT'S BEEN A GREAT PROCESS, I FEEL IT'S BEEN IN SLOW MOTION AND I'VE GOTTEN TO THE EN, END, I LOOKED BEHIND THE CURTAIN AND SAID I REALLY AM QUALIFIED. THE REASON I FEEL I AM MOST QUALIFIED, I HAVE THE EXPERIENCE RUNNING THE FOOD SHELF FOR SIX YEARS, HAVING A BUDGET OF $670,000, HAVING TO FUND RAISE HALF A MILLION DOLLARS AND WHEN I LEFT I LEFT THE STAFF AT THE FOOD SHELF WITH A SURPLUS OF $697,000. ALSO I HAVE THE SKILL SET IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT, PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT, CAPACITY BUILDING. AN EXAMPLE I CAN GIVE YOU STARTING WITH THE FOOD SHELF OUR ANNUAL BUDGET WAS $225,000, I HAD SIX STAFF. WHEN I LEFT WE HAD 12 STAFF, WE HAD TWO PROGRAMS. WHEN I LEFT RECOGNIZING THE NEED BECAUSE WE NEED TO RECOGNIZE NEED AND BE ABLE TO COME IN WITH A SOLUTION AND WHEN I LEFT WE HAD FOUR PROGRAMS, OKAY. SO, FURTHER MORE WHEN I GOT THERE I HAD TO FUND RAISE MAYBE $175,000 A YEAR. WHEN I LEFT I HAD THE CONNECTIONS AND MARKET AND PUT IT OUT THERE TO RAISE HALF A MILLION DOLLARS. IN THAT SENSE. I ALSO HAVE, LET'S SAY, HUMAN RESOURCE SKILLS, HIRING AND FIRING. DEALING WITH THE UNION. FOR EXAMPLE, WE WERE A CLOSED SHOP THERE, I WAS THE ONLY PERSON NOT UNION, SO I UNDERSTAND THE HIRING AND FIRING PROCESS AND THAT WOULD BE ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU ARE GOING TO FIRE SOMEBODY THERE NEEDS TO BE A PROGRESSIVE PROCESS WHERE YOU ARE LOOKING AT A WRITTEN WARNING, NOT VERBAL WARNING, PERHAPS SOME ACTION PLAN TO HAVE THE PROGRESSION. SO THOSE ARE THE THINGS THAT MAKE ME QUALIFIED THERE. AND AGAIN ABOUT PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT, NOT ONLY THAT, THE LEADERSHIP I HAVE I AM WILLING TO MAKE SACRIFICE FOR THE RIGHT KIND OF CHANGE. WHICH IS WHY AFTER 12 YEARS I LEFT THE FOOD SHELF RECOGNIZING, FOR ME I FEEL LIKE I RECOGNIZED THAT THE CITY LEADERSHIP WAS NOT UP TO PAR YEARS AGO. WELL, IN AREAS AROUND, LOOKING AT ESPECIALLY THE DEMOGRAPHIC CHANGING POPULATIONS AND NEEDING SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT RESOURCE TO RESPOND TO THE GROWING PAINS AND CHALLENGES OF BURLINGTON CHANGING ETHNICALLY, THAT'S WHEN I LEFT THE FOOD SHELF AND MADE THE SACRIFICE, TOOK A CUT IN PAY, 20 HOURS, NO BENEFITS, THAT WAS MY DEGREE PRO SESSMENTS I CREATED MY OWN OFFICE, THE CAPACITY, THE CAPACITY FOR US TO RESPOND TO A DEMOGRAPHIC CHANGE IN AN EQUAL AND EQUITABLE WAY. SO, I COULD GO ON BUT I DEFINITELY FEEL I AM MORE QUALIFIED. I MEAN, MY OPPONENT, HE IS A GREAT PLANNER, HE CAN PLAN, HE UNDERSTANDS HOUSING BUT IT'S MORE THAN THAT. AFTER YESTERDAY'S INTERVIEW, I DIDN'T KNOW THIS BUT THEY ASKED US THE LARGEST STAFF HE HAD OVERSEEN AND IT WAS THREE TO FIVE. SO, I'M LIKE, OKAY, OKAY, I CAN MANAGE STAFF. AND THEN AT THE FOOD SHELF MANAGING AND OVERSEEING MORE THAN 500 VOLUNTEERS A YEAR. MY COMPONENT WRIGHT, THERE IS ANOTHER ONE, HE DIDN'T HAVE ANY BROAD ADMINISTRATIVE OVERSIGHT STAFF AS WELL AS FAR AS MANAGING. SO, ON MANY LEVELS, LIKE I SAID, THE MORE I GET INTO THE CAMPAIGN, THE MORE I AM GLAD THAT I AM HERE, AND THEN AGAIN I THINK IT'S FOR A REASON, I'VE ALWAYS HAD LONG LASTING, VERY CARING AND NURTURING RELATIONSHIPS WITH MANY LEADERS THROUGHOUT THE STATE. SO I BELIEVE I'M THE ONE.

>> HOW WILL YOU USE THAT EXPERIENCE IN ORDER TO TRY AND SOLVE THE BURLINGTON TELL TELE-COM PROBLEM.

>> THAT'S ONE OF THOSE THINGS, YOU CAN'T TAKE IT BACK, IT'S DONE. UNFORTUNATELY WE'RE OUT $17 MILLION. MY ADMINISTRATION WILL CONTINUE TO STAY AT THE TABLE, MONITOR THE PROCESS AND INSURE WE CAN COME UP WITH A NEGOTIATION TO PAY BACK THE TAXPAYERS. BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY I DON'T THINK WE NEED TO THROW BURLINGTON TELE-COM OUT, THE FIBERS HAVE BEEN LAID, WE ARE AHEAD.

>> YOU THINK PARTNERING.

>> YES, WE DEFINITELY WANT TO PARTNER SOMEBODY TO COME IN AND HELP US WITH THE FINANCIAL BURDEN, BUT THE DETAILS NEED TO BE WORKED OUT ON THAT AND I THINK THAT BURLINGTON AT THIS POINT, I MEAN, WE CANNOT JUST GIVE UP ON BURLINGTON TELE-COM. I RAN INTO SOME INDIVIDUALS IN THE MALL WHO STOPPED ME AND SAID I HEARD YOU ARE RUNNING FOR MAYOR, I JUST WANT TO KNOW ONE THING. I SAID WHAT? ARE YOU GOING TO KEEP TELE-COM. GOOD, MY FRIEND AND I SAID IF THE CITY GETS RID OF THEM WE CAN'T VOTE FOR IT, IT'S SOMETHING WE CAN AFFORD. WE WANT IT TO BE AFFORDABLE. LOOK AT THE COST, I THINK WE NEED TO BE BIG ENOUGH TO ADMIT, HEY, IT WAS WRONG, IT WAS A MESS-UP AND LET'S MOVE ON AND MAKE THE BEST OF IT.

>> WHO DO YOU THINK MADE THE MESS UP.

>> I WILL SAY THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION, THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION AND I WON'T JUST PUT THE BLAME ON ONE PERSON, I BELIEVE THERE IS PLENTY OF BLAME TO GO AROUND, EVERYBODY WAS IN THE ROOM, WASN'T JUST ONE PERSON IN THE ROOM ALL THOSE YEARS WHEN IT WAS HAPPENING.

>> ANOTHER BIG PROJECT THAT THE CITY IS LOOKING AT THAT SORT OF FELL OUT OF THE HEAD LINES FOR A WHILE IS THE MIRAN REDEVELOPMENT. SEVERAL TENANTS HAVE PULLED OUT OF THAT, WHAT ILLS THE LATEST, WHAT DO YOU THINK SHOULD HAPPEN WITH THAT PLAN AND SPACE ON THE WATER FRONT.

>> IT'S SAD. GOOD QUESTION. IT'S SAD AND UNFORTUNATE INDIVIDUALS KEEP PULLING OUT, MAYBE IT'S NOT THE RIGHT TIME, MAYBE THERE'S MISS COMMUNICATION, I WOULD WANT TO LOOK AT THE PROCESS BUT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE -- CAN I HONESTLY TELL YOU THE PROPOSALS THAT HAVE BEEN PUT UP -- DO THEY HAVE THE WALL CLIMBING THING GOING ON? I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE WATER FRONT BE MORE CONNECTED TO THE OLD NORTH END. WE HAVE A LOT OF DEVELOPMENT AROUND DOWNTOWN AND THE WATER FRONT, BUT HOW CAN WE CONNECT THE PLAN AND ACTIVITY AND WHAT WILL HAPPEN MORE TO THE OLD NORTH END OR NEW NORTH END. I SAY THE PLAN AND HOW IT IS GOING DOWN ON THE WATER FRONT IS MORE OF A TOURIST ATTRACTION, THAT'S GREAT WERKS HAVE A BEAUTIFUL WALTER FRONT, I WOULD LIKE IT TO HAVE MORE BENEFIT TO BURLINGTON RESIDENT, PEOPLE WHO LIVE HERE, THAT'S WHAT I WOULD LIKE IT TO BE. I WOULD LIKE FOR US TO GO BACK TO THE TABLE AND HAVE CONTINUED DISCUSSION. ONE OF THE THINGS I WANT TO LOOK AT IN THE CITY IS THE FACT THAT OUR DECISION MAKING PROCESSES OR COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES WE'RE ALWAYS PLANNING AND LOOKING FOR ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES BUT WHEN YOU LOOK UP WHO IS IN THE ROOM AND NOT IN THE ROOM. SO, I THINK IT WOULD BE WORTH WHILE TO REVISIT AND TRY TO BE AS, WELL, FRUGAL AS POSSIBLE AND WHAT THAT COST WOULD BE.

>> DO YOU THINK THAT THE WATER FRONT SHOULD BE REDEVELOPED IN A WAY TO ATTRACT COMMERCIAL BUSINESS AS A WAY TO GET MORE TAX MONEY FOR THE CITY OR SOME OF THE IDEAS THAT YOU JUST PITCHED IN CONNECTING THE OLD NORTH END AND NEW NORTH END, ARE YOU ENVISIONING MORE OF A PUBLIC SPACE OR COMMERCIAL SPACE TO GET TAX DOLLARS.

>> I THINK WE CAN HAVE BOTH. I'M CAMPAIGNING ON HISTORY AND NEW IDEAS, I THINK WE CAN HAVE BOTH AND BE WILLING TO HAVE THE CONVERSATION. I AM GOING TO BE LOOKING FOR BEYOND THE USUAL SUSPECTS, THAT'S WHAT I LIKE TO SAY. SEEMS THERE ARE SOME IN THE TOWN THAT ARE PROFESSIONAL MEETING ATTENDERS AND THE CITY HAS THIS ENGAGEMENT POLICY AND OVERSIGHT BODIES IN PLACE BUT IF YOU START LOOKING AT THEM, THEY ARE NOT REALLY REPRESENTATIVE OF AND I DON'T THINK IF YOU GO INTO DETAIL THEY REPRESENT THE VIEWS OF THE COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE. I THINK WE NEED COMMERCIAL AS WELL AS MORE COMMUNITY USAGE FOR THAT SPACE DOWN THERE AND THE POSSIBILITIES COULD BE ENDLESS? YOU GRADUATED FROM BURLINGTON HIGH SCHOOL YEARS AGO.

>> YES, YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT?

>> WELL, I AM A BBA GUY.

>> OKAY, OKAY. IN '76, YES.

>> RECENTLY THE SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS ASKED FOR AN INCREASE IN TAXES IN ORDER TO COVER SOME OF THEIR COST ISSUES. YOU, AS FAR AS I KNOW, YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE WHO REALLY SUPPORT THAT, WHY WOULD YOU SUPPORT THE 10% INCREASE?

>> OUR CHILDREN ARE THE FUTURE. OUR CHILDREN ARE THE FUTURE AND I THINK WE HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO THEM FIRST. WE TALK ABOUT BEING A SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY AND I THINK WE NEED TO SUSTAIN AND MAKE SURE WE HAVE STRATEGIES THAT SUPPORT THEIR ACADEMIC GROWTH. I THINK A PART OF IT BEING FOOD SHELF DIRECTOR FOR 12 YEARS, I MEAN, JUST BECAUSE OUR NUMBERS GO UP, ARE WE DOING TO STOP FEEDING THE HUNGRY? STOP TRYING? MY UNDERSTANDING IS WE HAVE HAD ALSO PART OF THE INCREASE ENROLLMENT AS WELL. ALSO PART OF THAT INCREASE IS TECHNOLOGY. TO BE ABLE TO KEEP UP WITH THE LAPTOPS. WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO PARTNER RECENTLY WITH A GRANT WITH THE SCHOOL DISTRICT TO ALLEVIATE SOME OF THE PRESSURE. THE BUDGET IS OUT THERE. IF THE TAXPAYERS OR VOTERS ARE NOT SUPPORTIVE IN THE MAJORITY I SAY DON'T PASS IT. BUT I THINK WE NEED TO ACCEPT PEOPLE WHERE THEY ARE AND ME AS A TAXPAYER AND OVER, I'M GOING TO VOTE FOR THAT BUDGET. IT DOESN'T MEAN WHEN I'M ELECTED MAYOR WE CAN'T GO BACK AND REIGN IT IN SOME AND REALLY THINK ABOUT LONG TERM PLANNING AROUND MEASURES THAT ALLEVIATE STRESS ON TAX PAYERS.

>> YOU MUST RECOGNIZE THIS IS A TOUGH TIME ASKING FOR MORE MONEY.

>> YES, IT IS A TOUGH TIME AND YOU LOOK AT SOME OF THE BALLOT REQUESTS OUT THERE AND MANY HAVE BEEN TURNED DOWN, THIS IS A TOUGH TIME, SO, AGAIN, I WOULD WANT TO WORK ON THAT RELATIONSHIP AND DEVELOP AS MAYOR A BETTER UNDERSTANDING WITH THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND COMMISSIONER AS WELL AND MAYBE BRING IN -- MAYBE WE NEED A MORE REALISTIC LOOK AT WHY IT IS SO HIGH OR DEEPER UNDERSTANDING. AGAIN I WILL SAY AS A TAXPAYER AND I HAVE A CHILD AT HE'D EDMOND'S MIDDLE SCHOOL. WE NEED TO HAVE CERTAIN PROGRAM OPPORTUNITIES FOR THEM TO BE ENGAGED IN AND WE NEED OUR CLASSROOMS TO BE ADEQUATE IN SIZE, WE NEED TEACHERS THAT ARE QUALIFIED AND, SO, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR THE CITY OF BURLINGTON WHEN WE START TALKING ABOUT SUSTAINABLE QUALITIES AND ONE OF THE SECTORS WE LOOK AT IS EDUCATION, OKAY? SO, WE NEED TO GO BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD, WE NEED TO SIT DOWN AND MAYBE DO VOTES A FEW MONTHS WITH A FEW KEY STAKE HOLDERS, IT CAN'T KEEP HAVING, THERE HAS BEEN CONTINUOUS GROWTH AND SOMEBODY NEEDS TO COME UP WITH A BETTER EXPLANATION.

>> WHAT IS THE FUTURE'S MAYOR MAYOR ROLE WITH THE SCHOOL BOARD.

>> AS DEPARTMENT HEAD, THE MAYOR, THAT IS ONE POSITION THE MAYOR DOES NOT APPOINT. IN THIS SITUATION RIGHT NOW THE MAYOR NEEDS TO DEVELOP A MORE DIRECT AND LONG TERM -- A WORKABLE RELATIONSHIP. I THINK THE MAYOR NEEDS TO TAKE THE LEAD FOR TAXPAYERS AND HAFD A SERIOUS CONVERSATION WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT AND THE COMMISSIONER.

>> WE WILL TAKE A QUICK BREAK, WANDA HIN

>>> WE ARE BACK. WE ARE BACK. IN STEREO. WE'RE BACK WITH WANDA HINES, INDEPENDENT FOR BURRING BURLINGTON MAYOR.

>> YOU ARE AN INDEPENDENT, DON'T HAVE THE BACKING OF THE DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS, YOU TURNED DOWN THE PROGRESSIVES.

>> THEY NEVER CAME OUT --

>> BUT THE INSIN INSINUATION WAS YOU WOULD TAKE IT. WHY DID YOU TAKE THE INDEPENDENT?

>> BECAUSE I AM EVERY WOMAN. I'VE ALWAYS BEEN A TRAIL BLAZER, I FEEL. IT SEEMED TO BE WHO I WAS. I'VE NEVER REALLY GAVE IT ANY THOUGHT ABOUT ANY POLITICAL PARTY. I'VE REALLY JUST NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT IT. I KNEW I WAS NOT RUNNING AS A PROGRESSIVE. I KNEW AS MUCH AS WE ARE APPLAUDING WHERE WE ARE, I KNEW I WASN'T RUNNING AS A REGRESSIVE, AND DEFINITELY NOT AS A DEMOCRAT AND REPUBLICAN. IT JUST SEEMED TO ME INDEPENDENT. ONE OF MY MENTORS A KNEW YEARS AGO WHEN I STARTED WORKING AT CITY HALL, WE STARTED TO CLASH. I LOVE PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT, GOING AHEAD. THEY STOPPED ME AND SAID WHY DOES SHE HAVE TO BE SO INDEPENDENT, I SAID THAT'S WHO I AM, WHY I WAS HIRED. WHY DO YOU HAVE TO BE SO INDEPENDENT? MAYBE INDEPENDENT GETS THINGS DONE. MAYBE AT THIS TIME AND PLACE IN BURLINGTON WE NEED A MAYOR NOT SHACKELED BY THE PROMISES TO THE DEMOCRATIC PARTIES. THIS IS WHO I AM, I'M NOT INDEPENDENT THINKING BY MYSELF, BUT I'M WELL-CONNECTED, MAYBE IT IS I AM SENSITIVE TO EVERYBODY'S THINKING.

>> DID IT HELP THE FUND RAISE SOMETHING.

>> NO, MY FUNDRAISING ISN'T GOOD AT ALL, BUT I'M NOT RUNNING TO DO THAT. I THINK 50 YEARS BEING A NATIVE TO BURLINGTON WILL GET ME WHERE I NEED TO GO. THE LAST DAY I LEFT MY OFFICE, AN ELDERLY WOMAN, SUSAN WHEELER, I WAS COMING OUT OF CITY HALL AND SHE SAID I KNOW YOU. AND I SAID, WELL, YEAH, MY NAME IS WANDA HINES. SHE SAID THAT'S RIGHT, THAT'S WHY I'M VOTING FOR YOU. YOU'VE DONE GREAT THINGS IN THE COMMUNITY. I SAID THANKS, TODAY IS MY LAST DAY, I GET TO GO OUT AND CAMPAIGN AND SHOW THEM WHAT I CAN DO AND SHE SAID YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO THAT, WANDA, WE KNOW WHO YOU ARE. PART OF THE MAIN REASON FOR MY OPPONENT WEINBURGER, WRIGHT AND HINES ARE WELL-KNOWN IN THE COMMUNITY.

>> LAST CHECK YOU HAD ABOUT A THOUSAND DOLLARS.

>> I'M AT ABOUT 1500 AND I'M FEELING REALLY GOOD ABOUT IT. THANK YOU. YEAH, I'M NOT MOTIVATED BY MONEY.

>> WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOME FOLKS WHO HAVE WONDERED IF BECAUSE THIS IS A THREE WAY RACE YOU COULD BE A SPOILER SIPHONING VOTES AGAINST WEINBURGER, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THOSE PEOPLE?

>> I WOULD SAY WHO GETS TO DECIDE. THEY HAVE DIFFERENT LIFE EXPERIENCES AT THE TABLE. PERHAPS IF THAT INDIVIDUAL WANTS TO THINK THAT, I HAVE SEVERAL OTHER LENSES THAT SAYS DIFFERENT THINGS. THAT IS ONE THING, I'M NOT READING THE COMMENT SECTIONS OR BLOGS, I DON'T SEE THAT IT WAY. IF ANYTHING I FEEL THAT THEY ARE THE UNDER DOGS, THAT'S HOW I SEE IT.

>> DO YOU THINK YOU CAN GET 40% ON MARCH 6TH?

>> YES. MATTER OF FACT, WE WILL HAVE OUR FIRST DEBATE AT THE UNITARY AND CHURCH. DON'T FORGET WHAT I SAID, PULL BACK THE CURTAIN, I REMEMBER I WAS SITTING ON STAGE, HALFWAY THROUGH I'M SITTING ON THE STAGE, I DO A LOT OF PUBLIC APPEARANCES FOR THE FOOD PANTRY. I'M JUST AS CALM AND MY OPPONENT IS LIKE -- I THINK I CAN TAKE THESE GUYS. I JUST GOT BACK INTO THE DEBATE AND THAT'S HOW I FEEL ABOUT IT.

>> SPEAKING OF THAT, IT'S BEEN KIND OF INTERESTING TO SEE THAT IT HAS BEEN WARM, PERHAPS HEATED AT SOME POINTS BETWEEN THOSE TWO, THE DEMOCRAT AND REPUBLICAN IN THE RACE, YOU'VE MANAGED TO STAY OUT OF THE FRAY. HOW AND WHY.

>> HOW AND WHY? I HAVE PEOPLE SKILLS. I'M A FACILITATOR, THAT'S WHAT I DO, THE GOOD, THE BAD, I FACILITATE PEOPLE, THAT'S THE KIND OF LEADERSHIP WE NEED THAT CAN BECOME -- WON'T GET CAUGHT UP IN FRAY AND WILL LOOK AT IT FOR WHAT IT IS. WE HAVE DIFFERENT LIFE LENS EXPERIENCES. I'VE BEEN AROUND, 50 YEARS IN THIS COMMUNITY, I KNOW BURLINGTON, I'VE HAD GREAT TEACHERS AND IF ANYTHING I AM LOOKING AT THEM GOING, WOW, WHY WOULD I WANT TO GET INVOLVED IN IT? I'M SORRY.

>> NO.

>> HEY, I HAVE NO COMMON SENSE, THAT'S THE KIND OF LEADERSHIP I HAVE, TO NOT GET INVOLVED IN STUFF.

>> AFTER SOCIAL EQUITY DEBATE, KURT WRIGHT SAID HE WOULD LIKE TO BE IN ON HIS TEAM. DO YOU THINK THAT WAS PREMATURE?

>> I THINK IT WAS INAPPROPRIATE. INAPPROPRIATE FOR HIM TO COME OUT AND SAY THAT IN THAT ARENA. WE'RE IN THE MIDDLE OF A CAMPAIGN RIGHT NOW AND ANYBODY THINKING ABOUT ANY JOB, THIS IS SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BE DONE AT THEIR LEISURE AFTER THE CAMPAIGN SO THAT WAS SOMETHING AT THE TIME, YOU KNOW, CURTIS BEING KURT WAS BEING KURT. THERE WAS SLOP ABOUT THAT. IT WAS JUST INAPPROPRIATE, I DON'T THINK HE THOUGHT IT OUT WELL.

>> WE HAVE ABOUT A MINUTE LEFT, WHAT DO YOU WANT BURLINGTON VOTERS TO KNOW ABOUT WANDA HINES. SUM IT UP IN A MINUTE.

>> SUM IT UP IN A MINUTE? I'M A MOTHER, HOMEOWNER, A PRODUCT OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT. I FEEL THAT I AM BEST QUALIFIED AFTER BEING A BURLINGTON NATIVE FOR 50 YEARS, I'M RUNNING AN EFFICIENT AND FRUGAL CAMPAIGN AND I HAVE MORE RESPECT FOR BURLINGTON VOTERS THAN THE IDEA THAT THEY CAN BE BOUGHT. THAT'S WHAT I WANT THEM TO KNOW. I'M NOT A PARTY POLITICIAN, I APPRECIATE SUPPORT FROM ALL PARTIES AND I BELIEVE, AGAIN I'M RUNNING A CAMPAIGN OF HISTORY AND IDEAS AND THE NUMBER 1 IDEA IS BRINGING BURLINGTON BACK TO THE BASICS WHERE WE ANALYZE OUR BUSINESS AND ELECT A MAYOR BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE. SUPPORT TAXPAYERS AND PEOPLE THAT LIVE THERE. GOOD COMMON SENSE LEADERSHIP, GOOD COMMON SENSE LEADERSHIP TO NOT GO BETWEEN MY OPPONENTS WHEN THEY ARE ARGUING, THEY ARE BEING HOT AND BOTHERED. I WILL GIVE YOU GOOD, COMMON SENSE.

>> WANDA HYPES, INDEPENDENT FOR BURLINGTON MAYOR. APPRECIATE YOUR TIME. MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD ON MARCH 6TH, EVERY ONE. WE WILL SEE YOU SOON.
