Vermonters can weigh in on redistricting

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

A state Senate committee will take testimony Wednesday night on plans to redraw Vermont's legislative districts. The changes happen every 10 years to reflect changing populations.

One of the more controversial proposals involves moving Charlotte from the Chittenden County Senate district and putting it in Addison County instead. Supporters say it would eliminate the need for an additional senator in Chittenden County, but opponents say Charlotte identifies more with Chittenden County.

"What I'm asking people is what difference will it make in the lives of your residents if you're represented by some X senator, or X senator? Does it make does it make a difference in the lives of your citizens? And if it doesn't, then only those people who are politically active are really invested in this," said Sen. Jeanette White, D-Windham County.

A final vote on the house and Senate plans is expected by April. A public hearing will be held Wednesday night.
