LUDLOW, Vt. -
Snowboarding has been around as a varsity high school sport for just over a decade and has been dominated by three schools, Burr & Burton, Rutland and Black River. Last year, Green Mountain broke through as their girls squad became the first from a school other than that trio to earn a state title. The snowboard state finals are broken into three events. The giant slalom was run on Thursday with the half pipe and slope style events to take place in March. All three events are held at Okemo.
In the girls race, Woodstock's Olivia Clement recorded the fastest time on the course. It happened on her first run. She'd finish in second place overall as the Wasps place three boarders in the top five.
Lucey Gagner from Black River, competing on her home course, was the only one to complete her second run under 50 seconds. She ends up winning the girls event, although Black River finishes a point back of Woodstock in the team totals.
On the boys side, Rutland's Justin Frybarger had the fastest first run time on the course and was only one of three runs on the day under 45 seconds. The other two belonged to Burr and Burton's Will Helmetag. His second run time was the fastest of the day, clocking in at 44.18 seconds. The Bulldogs take the top spot in the team totals while Helmetag takes individual honors by 8 tenths of a second over Frybarger.
