LUDLOW, Vt. -
Police in Ludlow are warning second homeowners and their neighbors to be on alert after at least ten vacation homes on rural roads have been broken into.
Thieves have stolen flat screen TVs, laptops and jewelery. Ludlow Police Chief Jeff Billings says none of the homes had an alarm system and most of the burglaries happened in the early evening hours, on days when the homeowners were not in town. He says other homes with alarm systems have also been broken into but nothing from those homes has been stolen.
"Deadbolts are a must. Most of the houses they are going into now have easy window access or no dead bolts. I also would like second homeowners to make sure they are friends with their neighbors -- some full time residents -- have them watching their homes, that type of thing, let the homeowners know when they're going to be up and not up so they can see lights in the driveways," said Ludlow Police Chief Jeff Billings.
Chief Billings says he suspects the items are being stolen and then sold for drug money, and he has notified area pawn shops to be on alert.
