BURLINGTON, Vt. -
Beekeepers in northern New York are
reporting massive hive losses this year, but experts say the problem has not
been seen in Vermont.
According to the Plattsburgh
Press-Republican, beekeepers in the North Country have seen mortality rates of
90-100 percent. A small bee killing mite is being blamed for many of the
deaths. The varroa mite typically goes dormant in the winter, but bee experts
say that didn't happen this year due to the warmer weather.
But our check with a top bee expert in Vermont indicates
that hives here did not see a significant increase in bee losses.
