Senator Olympia Snowe
WASHINGTON -
Even though Democrats now have a shot to pick up a seat in the U.S. Senate, Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) is upset Senator Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) is calling it quits.
Snowe is a Moderate Republican from Maine. She announced last week she is she is not running again because of partisan fighting and that lawmakers instead need to work together. Senator Leahy talked to Snowe after her decision and says her retirement is a loss for the Senate.
"When I first came to the senate it was the accepted thing that Republicans and Democrats worked together. Of course there are some issues we are going to disagree on, but on most issues you worked together for the good of the country. I want to see us get back to that," Leahy said.
Leahy is not up for re-election until 2016. The 72-year-old has not yet said if he'll run again.
