Frustration over lack of renovations after Brattleboro fire

Posted: Updated:
BRATTLEBORO, Vt. -

It's been almost a year since the Brooks House fire in downtown Brattleboro and there is growing frustration about the pace of renovation efforts.

Aside from murals which were painted on the windows of empty storefronts, the downtown building has not been revamped. There is currently no demolition taking place and upper floor apartments remain boarded up.

About 11 businesses were forced to leave downtown because of the fire and business officials say their absence is being felt.

"It is enormously important to us to have that building be as viable and vital to our downtown streetscape as possible. Aside from the fact that there are very fewer stores and opportunities for our visitors and our locals to find what they need in Brattleboro because of the vacancies in that building," said Jerry Goldberg of the Brattleboro Chamber of Commerce.

Goldberg says a hold up between the building owner and insurance company is delaying the project.
