March Madness brackets: Rondo the goat vs. Mike McCune

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

It's hard to escape March Madness, the conclusion of college basketball. The University of Vermont men are still playing, hoping to make their way through the brackets.

Filling out the brackets at the office has become a national pastime; co-workers plunking down $5 in the office pool hoping to win a big cash payout and, more importantly, bragging rights for the year.

Even the president-- a basketball player and fan-- makes his choices.

But those who know nothing about the sport also make their picks. So is it all luck? Or is there some talent behind it?

We decided to have a little fun.

Rondo is my pet goat. So if any critter should be able to score in the big dance it would be Rondo. He's named after Rajon Rondo, a star on the Boston Celtics basketball team.

Reporter Judy Simpson (to Rondo): Here we go-- North Carolina or UVM?

Each team was written on a separate piece of paper. Rondo made his choice.

Judy Simpson (to Rondo): Oh, UVM. OK, so it is UVM for that bracket.

"I think North Carolina is the best team in tournament," WCAX Sports Director Mike McCune said. "When you are not sure. Stick with home."

Let's compare Rondo's picks to Mike McCune's.

Judy Simpson (to Rondo): We have Vanderbilt or Harvard. You have to concentrate, buddy. Vanderbilt.

"This is the brain game," McCune said. "As an Ivy League graduate, even though it's rare, I would root for Harvard in any circumstance. I am picking the Crimson."

Judy Simpson (to Rondo): UNC-Ashville or Syracuse. Which one of these? Syracuse!

"Rondo picked Syracuse as well," McCune said. "He probably likes oranges."

This whole madness will go on for a couple of weeks. Rondo doesn't appear to be too stressed about the outcome. Mike McCune on the other hand...

We'll keep you posted on the brackets as we move along with our little experiment.
