Memorial planned for Melissa Jenkins

Posted: Updated:
ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. -

The St. Johnsbury community is keeping the memory of Melissa Jenkins alive.

As details of her gruesome murder have spread through the town, residents are planning a memorial service Friday.

Some of Jenkins' fellow teachers at St. Johnsbury Academy were handing out pink ribbons Thursday, to be worn in memory of Jenkins and support of her grieving family. Friends are calling for people across the state to honor Jenkins by wearing pink Friday. And a public memorial service will be held Friday afternoon in the Alumni Memorial Gymnasium at the high school at 4 p.m. As many as 1,400 people expected to attend.

"When you lose somebody that's had such a great impact in such a short period of time it's our job as a community to remember her in a way that she would have done for others," said Jeff Burroughs of St. Johnsbury Academy.

A trust fund has been created for Jenkins' 2-year-old son at Passumpsic Savings Bank. Donations will be used to help take care of the toddler and can be made at any of the bank's branches. Click here for more on the fund.

And Speaker Shap Smith took to the House floor Thursday and encouraged lawmakers to donate to the Melissa Jenkins Memorial Trust and to wear pink Friday.
