BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A judge has ordered a competency evaluation for a homeless man charged with killing a Vermont social worker in 2010.

Jose Pazos, 46, has pleaded not guilty to charges he killed 50-year-old Kathleen Smith in October 2010. Smith's body was found bound in her home. An autopsy determined she bled to death from a neck wound.

Pazos wants to represent himself. The Burlington Free Press reports Judge Brian Grearson overturned a previous decision to let Pazos expand on a complaint against his defense lawyer to first undergo a competency evaluation.

A competency hearing has been scheduled for April 30 in Vermont Superior Court in Burlington.
