Vt. man charged and jailed in girlfriend assault

Posted: Updated:

HARTLAND, Vt. (AP) - A 29-year-old man police describe as a transient is in a Vermont prison after he was charged with assaulting his ex-girlfriend and holding a knife to her throat.

Police say Gordon Briggs assaulted his girlfriend on Sunday and damaged her vehicle.

Police were called Tuesday by staff at a New Hampshire hospital who told police the victim was being treated at the emergency room and that she had been assaulted in Hartland, Vt.

At first police couldn't find Briggs, but he was eventually reached by telephone.

He wouldn't tell police where he was, but Briggs turned himself in Wednesday and he was arraigned on charges of first-degree aggravated domestic assault and other charges.

Briggs is being held at the Springfield prison for lack of $25,000 bail.
