SPRINGFIELD, Vt. -

A Vermont inmate is in intensive care after a prison cell assault.

Police say Dakota Gardner, 21, attacked Ryan John, 19, Monday inside the Springfield prison.

Corrections officials say they noticed a window of the cell was papered over and when they went in, John was unconscious and had suffered severe injuries. John is expected to survive, but DOC staffers say a full recovery is less likely.

Vermont Corrections Commissioner Andy Pallito says both corrections and State police are investigating.

"We see probably a couple hundred assaults and they range anywhere from a push to something like this. We don't see assaults like this very frequently, we're very lucky, we run very safe, secure institutions," Pallito said.

Pallito says he expects Gardner will be charged following the investigation.

Gardner-- who was due to be released from state prison Monday-- recently made headlines for allegedly sending threatening letters to Governor Shumlin and President Obama. He's being held in segregation following the incident.

John was being held in Springfield on a pending lewd and lascivious charge.
