Fire crews battle Westford blaze

Posted: Updated:
WESTFORD, Vt. -

Imagine returning from a vacation - to find your home on fire. That happened to a Westford family Monday evening. Their home is a total loss.

"It's all gone. All we have now is the luggage we came off the plane with," said homeowner Lynn Knight.

Lynn Knight's family had just landed at the airport -- following a week in Florida -- when she got a call on the drive back - their Westford home on North Road was on fire.

"A lot of memories, a lot of years worth of work. My husband spent years and years building that house to the way we wanted it and he did it on his own," Knight said.

The fire started in a shed near the home late Monday afternoon - then spread to the house. Crews tried to attack the fire inside the home - but had to get out because it was just too dangerous.

They also chased flames that started a small brush fire.

"It started to go up on a hill here to the left of us - but they got that out pretty quick," said Westford Fire Chief Randy Botala.

"I just kept thinking of the things you can't replace - my father passed away and I had stuff from him - grandparents photos," said Knight.

The Knight's niece and her son were at the house - and got out safely. Three of the family's cats were alright - but one is missing. Despite the devastation -- Lynn Knight is thankful -- and looking to rebuild.

"My girls were safe, my husband was safe, my niece and little grandnephew, everyone was safe," said Knight.

Fire crews don't know what caused it - but say nothing appears suspicious. Lynn Knight says her family may be homeless right now - but they're not out in the cold -- dozens of family and friends are offering help.
