Vt.'s Sterling College names new president

Posted: Updated:

CRAFTSBURY COMMON, Vt. (AP) - Vermont's smallest 4-year college has named its new president.

Matthew Derr, 44, is joining Sterling College in the fall.

Derr helped lead an alumni capital campaign that raised about $15 million to revive Antioch College in Ohio, which reopened last year.

Derr received a degree in history from Antioch in 1989. He served as interim president of the college before the reopening. Before that, he was associate head of the Walnut Hill School, a boarding school near Boston.

He succeeds Will Wootton, who is retiring. Wootton has been president since 2006.

The Burlington Free Press reports Sterling has an enrollment of about 100 students. Its hands-on environmental focus emphasizes mastering an ax and crosscut saw; growing food; and taking winter camping trips without tents.
