RUTLAND, Vt. -
Tax relief for a senior living
facility in Rutland.
Earlier this year we brought you the
story of the Gables. The senior home was shocked when it received a bill for
over $300,000 in back taxes. But now it doesn't have to pay up. Lawmakers
amended the meals and rooms tax law, which hadn't been updated in decades. It
now excludes independent living facilities, residential care homes and assisted
living facilities.
"I had felt good
about it all the way through. Obviously at one point we were very nervous about
it. It was looming. But really the support-- I never felt unsupported or left
out to dry by our local reps. It was amazing. Such an exercise or such a lesson
in civics to see it in action and to see some people who really cared about
making sure we were able to do what we had to do to take care of our seniors in
Vermont," said Jay Grimes of the Gables.
The law also abated all of
the Gables' back taxes.
