A Vermont State trooper who resigned this week is now facing criminal charges.
Attorney General Bill Sorrell says Eric Howley of Wilmington has been cited into court on two counts of simple assault.
State police revealed on Tuesday that prior to his resignation Howley had been on administrative leave since April. Authorities have not revealed any details about the charges.
Howley did face an excessive force complaint back in 2005 that resulted in the state paying a $135,000 settlement.
