WILMINGTON, Vt. -
A fight over a stolen canoe is behind
the charges against an ex-state trooper.
Friday, police released details about
the simple assault case against Eric Howley, 40, of West Dover.
In April, police say Howley reported
his canoe had been stolen. Later that day, he spotted two people using the
canoe on Lake Raponda in Wilmington. While confronting the suspected thieves,
police say Howley assaulted them.
Howley resigned from the Vermont State
police this week and will be in court next month.
