Fire crews battle Barre apartment blaze

Posted: Updated:
BARRE, Vt. -

An early morning blaze in Barre has displaced several families.

The fire broke out some time after three o'clock at a three-story apartment building on Elm Street. Authorities say it started in the ceiling fan in a bathroom in one of the first floor units and then spread.

Fire officials say a 10-year-old on the first floor woke up to the fire alarm and got the rest of her family up.

They were able to get everyone out of the building safely, including all pets.

We're told four or five of the units have been badly damaged or destroyed and that eight or nine people have been evacuated.

The Red Cross is assisting those families. This is the third big fire in Barre City over the last 48 hours.
